US-Colombia oil pipeline closed

A joint US-Colombian oil pipeline has been temporarily closed for repair work after being hit by three bomb attacks inside Colombia, state oil company Ecopetrol has announced.

The spokesman for the Colombian largest petroleum company said on Monday that the Cano Limon-Covenas Pipeline, owned jointly by Colombia and the US, has been temporarily shut down to undergo repair following bomb blasts last week.

He went on to explain that “some damaged sections were located in remote areas that are difficult to access,” adding that it is still hard to say when it is ready to operate again.

According to Ecopetrol officials, the shutdown of the pipeline would not have swift effect on US Occidental Petroleum Corp’s oil production or exports, which supplies crude oil for the pipelines from its operation field near the Venezuelan border, where the attacks took place.

This is while the Colombian security forces have yet to release any information about the perpetrators of the attack, that whether the explosions were conducted by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) or the National Liberation Army (ELN), Colombia’s second-largest rebel group.

Colombia has been witnessing a surge in guerrilla attacks on oil infrastructure since 2012. According to the Colombian officials, the Cano Limon-Covenas has been attacked 27 times this year alone.
