President Santos thanks international community for support of peace process with FARC
Addressing Colombia’s foreign diplomats, President Juan Manuel Santos thanked the international community Monday for its support of ongoing peace talks between the nation’s government and the rebel group FARC.“I cannot thank you and your governments enough for the permanent support expressed everyday for our advancing peace talks with the FARC,” said the president in to Colombia’s Diplomatic Corp early Monday.
Santos specifically mentioned Cuba, Chile, Norway and Venezuela, who have been guarantors during the fourth historic peace talks with the guerrillas, which have been ongoing in Havana, Cuba since November 2012.
“But also there are many countries and organizations that have sent us their good wishes and have offered their help and their availability to cooperate and support us with whatever we need,” the head of state added.
Should the 50 year armed conflict come to an end due to these talks, Santos stated it would impact the region and the world.
“If we achieve the termination of the armed conflict in Colombia, it will end the last armed conflict in the hemisphere…which is significant for regional security and global security. For this reason, the peace of our country is a fundamental part of peace for the world.”
Colombia’s Diplomatic Corp met at the presidential palace, the Casa de Nariño, and is comprised of all of the foreign diplomats from the country.
The Santos Administration has been receiving praise from many sides and has been thanking many international bodies since the start of the peace talks over a year ago.
