sohely-ruaColombian union leader Sohely Rua Castañeda will visit Minneapolis on Monday, April 29, discuss the struggle for workers’ rights in Colombia,  Her visit comes on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the U.S.– Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

Despite promised protections for workers before the implementation of the free trade agreement, Colombia continues to be the deadliest country in the world for trade unionists. Since 2011, 29 trade unionists in Colombia have been murdered and more than 300 new death threats have been received.

Sohely Rua Castañeda is the Secretary of Women and Labor for Colombia’s National Union School. She has written extensively about women’s labour rights, employment in the informal sector and the feminization of poverty.

She will discuss how the free trade agreement particularly impacts women.

Casteñeda’s visit is sponsored by Witness for Peace, the Minnesota AFL-CIO, the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service, Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition and SEIU Local 26.
