Colombian Prosecutors Arrest Former Congressman Luis Fernando Almar

Agents of the Technical Investigation Office of the Colombian General Attorney´s Office captured today former congressman Luis Fernando Almar, to testify about his alleged links with paramilitary groups.

Almar was arrested at his residence in the north of the capital, by order of the Supreme Court.

Former member of Congress by the Department of Caqueta, southeast of the country, is under investigation for allegedly seeking political support from the Central Bolivar Bloc of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) to get to Congress.

Almar was processed in February 2008 by order of the Supreme Court, but was released on May 20, 2009.

The Court has opened several cases against lawmakers and former members of the Senate for alleged ties to paramilitaries, known as part of the scandal “para-politics”.

One of those involved in this issue is Senator by the Social Party of National Unity (Partido de la U) Dilian Francisca Toro.

Since late 2006, more than 60 parliamentarians and former congressmen have been procecuted by the Supreme Court and the Attorneys Office for their links with the paramilitaries.

The AUC, dissolved in 2006, were illegal organizations of the right-wing paramilitaries, funded in April 1997, and were on the terror lists of Colombia, the European Union and the United States.
