A Costa Rican model living in South Florida found out that things are different up north, admitting to authorities that she left her one-year-old daughter alone at home while she went shopping.
According to a CBSMiami report, 26-year-old Sandy Hernandez was arrested on Tuesday after her toddler was found wandering around unaccompanied inside her apartment building.
Police said two witnesses saw the child wandering around by herself and searched the entire 32nd floor of a building located at 1750 North Bayshore Drive in Miami. The witnesses then brought the child to the building’s security office located on the first floor to see if anyone knew the little girl’s parents, per a police report.
She was charged with a felony count of child neglect and there is an immigration hold on Herenandez.
A report by the Miamiherald.com said Hernandez was also questioned about “visible markings on the victim’s entire left leg and arm,” according to the report. Hernandez told police she was not sure how the child was injured.
Police also noted in the report that Hernandez’s apartment was in “disarray and in poor living conditions for a child.”
“I don’t hold messy houses against people, I do hold leaving children alone though, I find that a problem, it is a violation of the law,” Judge Mindy Glazer said in court Tuesday.
The baby is now in the care of the Department of Children and Families, police said.
Hernandez is Colombian citizen with residency in Costa Rica.
