Colombia’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (Mintic) and the National Spectrum Agency (ANE) have launched a 4G spectrum tender. Colombia will award seven licences that will enable the provision of 4G services across the country.

The tender winner is expected to be announced on 26 June. The government plans to extend the 4G services coverage to 50 percent of the head towns in Colombia’s municipalities by July 2014, and to all head towns over the next five years, Prensario reports.

Two licences will be awarded to new entrants in Colombia’s mobile market, while America Movil’s unit Claro will only be allowed to participate in the auction for 2,500MHz spectrum.
