Colombia Cities Compete for Chinese Auto Plant

The location from the Buenaventura port in the Pacific could make the difference in a struggle between Cundinamarca, Risaralda and Boyacá.

Several cities are competing to a new automotive assembly plant investment by China. The news was confirmed by the Agencia de Promoción de Inversión de Risaralda (Investment Promotion Agency of Risaralda), “Invest in Pereira”.

Also looking to attract the US$20 million dollar investment and directo employment for 100 are the Risaralda and Bogotá.

Although not confirmed yet, sources to TodayColombia say it could be the BYD Chinese car manufacturer, which as expressed an interest in introducing electric vehicles to the market, that has set its eyes on Colombia.

BYD has been working on a pilot project importing electric vehicles for use as taxis. The Asian frim has also expressed an interest in the assembly of buses fro the TransMilenio (the mass transit bus system in Bogotá).

The decision will be influenced by several factors, road infrastructure and closeness to the port.
