330,000 Colombia Public School Teachers Strike

marcha 10

About 330,000 public school teachers throughout the country went on strike on Monday , saying the government hasn’t maintained its promises to their union.

FECODE, the teacher’s union, wrote in a letter to Senate President Juan Fernando Cristo that the Education and Finance Ministries haven’t fulfilled an agreement reached in May to improve teachers’ health benefits, salaries and working conditions, according to FECODE President Luis Grubert.

Education Minister María Fernanda Campo said the work stoppage is an “absolutely unjustified” measure, adding the government will fulfill its promise to the teachers.

Since Sept. 2, the government has had “an open dialogue, frank and respectful with Fecode,” she said.
