COLOMBIA NEWS – The Attorney General”s Technical Team of Investigators (CTI) arrested 27 politicians yesterday in the northern area of Uraba over their ties with the Cardenas Elmer bloc led by Freddy Rendon, the former chief of the paramilitary group.
In total 50 warrants were issued, of which 27 have been completed so far.
The detainees, among which appear the current mayor of Turbo municipality, will be kept in preventive detention, emphasized the CTI.
According to investigations, the group captured was involved with paramilitary troops belonging to Rendon, alias El Aleman (The German) which organized the so-called Uraba United in Peace Political Bloc in order to force campesinos to obey the orders of the United Self-Defense of Colombia (AUC) paramilitary.
Since 2012, the attorney general’s office has been going after the paramilitary gangs through their activities and political campaigns in Uraba and the possible benefits they may have obtained as a result, with some chosen as candidates for popular elections, like mayors and city council members.
As a result of the investigations, former mayors, former council members and other former officials from seven municipalities in the agro-industrial region of Apartad remain under arrest.
