COLOMBIA NEWS – At least seven people were killed and nine others injured when a wildcat gold mine collapsed on Wednesday in Colombia’s southern Cauca province.
The accident happened in the rural Timbiqui area, some 440 km from the capital of Bogota, the local disaster prevention department said.
It is the second gold mine disaster in the province this year. A similar accident in rural Santander de Quilichao, Cauca, killed 12 and injured two.
Many illegal mines have been operating in gold-rich areas controlled by the rebel militants.
