Peru and Colombia will partner in their first joint operation to combat illegal gold mining.
Peruvian High Commissioner for Interdiction and Formalization of Mining, Daniel Urresti will travel to Colombia in the near future to discuss the operation’s details with Colombian authorities, according to the Andina news agency.
The meeting will occur after 1,500 police officers and military troops destroyed US$20 million worth of heavy machinery used for illegal gold mining earlier this month. It was the government’s first action of its kind since officials announced a nationwide ban on illegal mining that went into effect April 19.
The operation occurred in the district of Huepetuhe in the jungle region of Madre de Dios, which has been damaged by illegal mining. The state of Madre de Dios is home to about 40,000 illegal miners.
